Getting the Idea
So, I was watching Clueless the other day, you know, that movie from way back. And that scene with Cher’s closet computer? It always stuck with me. The idea of picking out outfits on a screen seemed pretty cool, maybe even useful. I thought, hey, maybe I could rig something up like that, something simple, for my own clothes.
First Steps – Reality Check
First thing I figured I needed was pictures. Pictures of everything. Tops, pants, skirts, jackets, the whole lot. So, I started pulling stuff out. Laid it all on the bed, tried to get decent lighting. Man, this took way longer than I thought. Getting the colors right in the photos was a pain. Some shirts looked totally different on camera.
- Pulled out shirts.
- Took photos one by one.
- Did the same for pants.
- Realized I have way too much black clothing that looks the same in photos.
After maybe an hour and only getting through half my shirts, I was already thinking this was a bit much. Cher definitely had someone doing this for her, right?
Trying to Organize
Okay, so I had a bunch of photos on my computer. Now what? I needed a way to see them, mix and match them. I didn’t have fancy software like in the movie. My first thought was just folders. Like, a folder for ‘T-Shirts’, ‘Jeans’, ‘Sweaters’. I dragged the photos into the right folders. It was okay, but clicking through folders wasn’t exactly the slick interface Cher had.
Then I tried just opening a bunch of photos and dragging them around on the screen to see how they looked together. It kinda worked? But it was clumsy. Getting the sizes right, lining things up… it wasn’t smooth.
Hitting a Wall
The biggest problem was just the sheer amount of work. Taking all the photos was tedious. Keeping it updated? Every time I got something new, I’d have to photograph it, categorize it. And honestly, most mornings, grabbing something familiar is just faster than booting up a computer and browsing digital outfits.
I looked into some apps that promise to do this. Some wanted subscriptions, others were just glorified shopping lists. None really felt like that simple, visual mix-and-match thing from the movie without a ton of effort upfront.
What I Ended Up With
So, did I get the full Clueless closet? Nope. Not even close. It was way more effort than I expected for something I probably wouldn’t use every day.
What I did end up doing was taking photos of specific outfits I know work well together. Like, pairings I might forget about. I just put those few photos in a simple album on my phone. If I’m really stuck on what to wear, I sometimes scroll through that. It’s not high-tech, it’s not automated, but it’s a tiny, practical help sometimes.
It was a fun little project to try, though. Made me appreciate movie magic, and also how much simpler just opening the wardrobe door is!
