Okay, so today I wanted to figure out what “psychological noise” really means. I’ve heard the term tossed around, but I wanted to get a better handle on it.

Digging In
First, I opened up my browser and typed in “definition of psychological noise”. I figured a straight-up search was the best place to start. I scrolled through a bunch of results, you know, the usual mix of dictionary definitions and articles.
Sorting Through the Info
I started clicking on some of the links that looked promising. Some were too academic, with really complicated words. Others were too simple, like, duh, I already knew that. I was looking for something in the middle – clear and easy to understand, but not dumbed down.
I found a few articles that seemed pretty good. I skimmed through them, looking for key ideas and examples. It seemed like everyone was saying something similar, but in slightly different ways. I am start to collect.
Making Sense of It All
After reading a bunch of stuff, I started to piece it together in my own head. I realized that psychological noise is basically all the internal stuff that messes with communication.
It’s not about actual sounds, like a loud truck outside. It’s about what’s going on in your head.

- Worries: Like, if you’re stressed about a test, you might not hear what your friend is saying.
- Preconceived notions: If you already think someone is a jerk, you might twist their words to fit that idea.
- Daydreaming: Yeah, if you’re off in la-la land, you’re definitely not paying attention.
- Strong emotions if you feel strong emotions, you maybe can not hear others.
Putting It Into My Own Words
So, I tried to come up with my own way of explaining it. I figured it’s like this: Psychological noise is like having a bunch of tabs open in your brain. All those other thoughts and feelings make it hard to focus on the one “tab” that’s the actual conversation you’re supposed to be having.
That’s my take on it, anyway. I think I have a much better understanding of psychological noise now. It was a good little deep dive for the day!
