Futuristic female clothing trends? Discover new outfit inspirations!

by Alice Browne

Okay so I saw all these crazy runway pics floating around with shiny materials and weird shapes last week. Thought to myself, “Man, that’s wild stuff but how do regular people wear this?” Decided to mess around with some futuristic looks using stuff I already own plus thrift store finds.

The Hunt For Weird Fabrics

First hit up that sketchy fabric warehouse downtown where everything feels like plastic. Grabbed three yards of this silver vinyl that crinkles like chip bags when you walk. Almost bought neon green spandex too but remembered that one bad disco party incident.

  • Dug through my closet: found old bike shorts, clear plastic heels, and grandma’s metallic belt
  • Stole my brother’s broken VR headset for accessories (don’t tell him)
  • Cut holes in a garbage bag? Almost happened

Assembly Disaster Time

Tried draping the silver vinyl over my dress form like those high-fashion tutorials. Looked more like a baked potato than future clothing. Got annoyed and just safety-pinned it around my waist like a skirt. The crinkling sounded like I was making nachos with every step.

Then I put bike shorts under it with those plastic heels. Added granny’s belt as a chest plate thing? Totally stabbed myself with the buckle. Worth it for the cyborg vibe. The broken VR headset hung off my hip like some techy purse.

The Mirror Test

Stood in front of my mirror for like 20 minutes walking back and forth. The noise alone would scare pigeons. Thought “Damn this feels stupid” but also kinda cool? The silver caught every light in my apartment – looked like a disco ball walking.

Took selfies feeling like a space pirate. My cat freaked out when I walked by. Good sign? Maybe?

What Actually Worked

  • Mixing textures: Shiny+matte combo (vinyl + cotton tee)
  • Simple base: Plain black top didn’t fight the loud skirt
  • Weird proportions: Oversized belt totally changed silhouette

Tried it again without the headset thing next day with normal sneakers. Got five strangers asking where I got the “skirt”. Thrift store fantasy for less than 8 bucks. Future fashion isn’t just costumes – it’s about playing with shapes and making everyday stuff look alien.

Still finding vinyl shreds everywhere though. My vacuum cleaner hates me now.
