First time at a watches gala: what now? (Your quick guide to navigating the big watch night)

by Meredith Sassoon

So, I found myself at this “watches gala” thing. Not really my usual scene, to be honest. Got an invite, figured, why not? See what all the fuss is about. I’ve heard people talk about these events like they’re the pinnacle of something or other. My expectations? Well, let’s just say I kept them pretty grounded.

First off, getting there was an adventure in itself. Dressed up a bit, felt a tad like I was playing a part in a movie I hadn’t read the script for. You know that feeling? Anyway, walked into the place, and yeah, it was fancy. Lots of dimmed lights, shiny surfaces, and that low hum of people trying to sound important. Canapés were floating around on trays, looking too small to actually eat.

The Main Attraction… Or Was It?

And the watches, right. That’s what it was all about. They were there, no doubt. Under glass, sparkling like crazy. Big names, tiny gears, price tags that made my eyes water. I wandered around, looked at a few. nodded like I understood the difference between a tourbillon and a- well, something else equally complicated. Some folks were super into it, peering through little magnifying glasses, having intense hushed conversations. Good for them, I guess.

But you know what I ended up doing most of the time? People-watching. That was the real show. You had your types:

  • The Serious Collectors: Looked like they were dissecting a frog in biology class, but with watches.
  • The Networkers: Eyes darting around, business cards practically leaping out of their pockets. Less about the watches, more about who they could impress.
  • The “Just Here for the Vibe” Crew: Like me, mostly. Trying the free drinks, admiring the decor.

I got talking to this one chap, not about watches at all. Turned out he designed garden gnomes for a living. Found that more interesting than the spiel about “heritage” and “craftsmanship” I overheard for the tenth time. He said these events were great for “observing human nature in its natural habitat of aspiration.” I kind of agreed with him there.

What I Actually Took Away

Spent a couple of hours there. Had a few of those tiny snacks – still hungry afterwards. The watches were, well, watches. Very expensive, very shiny watches. Did I suddenly feel the urge to own one? Not really. My old Timex still tells the time, last I checked.

What I did find was that these things are less about the objects themselves and more about the… performance of it all. The display, the exclusivity, the little dance everyone does. It was an experience, for sure. I wouldn’t say it changed my life, but it was a peek into a world that’s usually just a glossy magazine ad. And honestly, the garden gnome designer was the highlight. Made me think that sometimes the most interesting things are found where you least expect them, even at a watches gala.

So, yeah, that was my evening. Went, saw, and mostly just confirmed that I’m probably not the target audience for six-figure timepieces. But hey, I got a story out of it, right?
