Alright, buckle up, because I’m about to spill the beans on my latest sneaker project: a purple and black Nike Air Max custom job. It was a journey, let me tell you, but totally worth it in the end.

The Inspiration Hit
So, it all started with me scrolling through Instagram, like you do. I saw this crazy cool color combo – deep purple and sleek black – and it just clicked. I knew I had to get it on a pair of Air Maxes. I’ve always been a fan of Air Maxes, the comfort is just unbeatable, and they’re a perfect canvas for customization.
Gathering the Supplies
First things first, I needed the right kicks. I snagged a pair of all-white Air Max 90s. Clean slate, you know? Then came the paint. I spent way too long at the art store trying to find the perfect shades of purple and black acrylic paint. I also grabbed some paint brushes – different sizes for different details – painter’s tape, some sponges, and a sealant to protect my masterpiece.
Prep Work is Key

This is the boring but crucial part. I cleaned the shoes like crazy. Used some rubbing alcohol to get rid of any dirt or grease. Then, I meticulously taped off the areas I didn’t want to paint – the swoosh, the midsole, all that. This step is seriously important. Rushing it will ruin the whole project.
Let the Painting Begin!
I started with the purple. I wanted a gradient effect, so I used a sponge to dab on the lighter shades at the front of the shoe, gradually getting darker towards the back. It took a few coats to get the color saturation I wanted. Patience is key here, folks. Let each coat dry completely before adding another.
Black Out
Next up was the black. I used a fine brush to carefully paint the Nike swoosh and some other details. I wanted a sharp, clean look, so I took my time. This part was a little nerve-wracking because one slip of the brush and it’s all over!

Adding Some Texture
To add some extra pizzazz, I decided to go for a slightly textured finish on some parts. I stippled some black paint onto the purple areas using a stiff brush. This gave it a cool, almost galaxy-like effect.
Sealing the Deal
After letting the paint dry for a full 24 hours, I applied a few coats of sealant. This is super important to protect the paint from cracking or fading. I used a matte sealant to keep the original look.
The Grand Reveal
Finally, the moment I’d been waiting for! I carefully peeled off the painter’s tape and… boom! The purple and black Nike Air Max was born. I was so stoked with how they turned out. They looked even better than I’d imagined.
Lessons Learned
- Prep work is NOT optional.
- Thin coats of paint are better than thick, goopy ones.
- Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to waiting for paint to dry.
- A good sealant is your best friend.
Rocking My New Kicks
I’ve been rocking these shoes non-stop ever since. They’re a total head-turner, and I always get asked where I got them. It’s so satisfying to say, “I made them myself!”
So, yeah, that’s the story of my purple and black Nike Air Max adventure. It was a fun project, and I learned a lot along the way. If you’re thinking about customizing your own sneakers, I say go for it! Just remember to take your time, be patient, and have fun!
