Emily in Paris Ami: Style Guide

by Afra Jennings

Okay, so everyone’s been talking about that show, you know, the one with the American girl in Paris. And yeah, the fashion is a big part of it. I found myself paying attention too, more than I thought I would.

How It All Started

I was binge-watching an episode, and there it was. One of the characters, I think it might have been Sylvie, or maybe even Emily herself in a more ‘toned-down’ moment, was wearing this really neat sweater. It had that little heart logo with the ‘A’. Ami, right? It looked so effortlessly cool, so Parisian. And I thought, “Hey, I like that. That’s a piece I could actually see myself wearing.” It wasn’t too over-the-top, just chic and simple.

The Hunt for That Parisian Vibe

So, down the rabbit hole I went. My first stop, obviously, was the internet. I typed in things like “Emily in Paris red heart sweater” and “Ami Paris fashion”. And sure enough, tons of results. Everyone was apparently looking for these pieces. I found the specific items, saw them on various websites. And then I saw the prices. Wow. Okay, that “effortless cool” definitely came with a hefty price tag. I mean, I appreciate quality, but this was more than I expected for a knitted top.

I didn’t give up immediately. I thought, “Maybe it’s just the online markup, or maybe seeing it in person will convince me.” There’s a department store nearby that stocks some designer brands, so I made a trip. Found the Ami section. The clothes were nice, good materials, you could feel the quality. The designs were clean. I tried on a cardigan, similar to what I’d seen. It felt good, not gonna lie.

Reality Bites, Doesn’t It?

But then I looked at the tag again. And I stood there for a bit, just thinking. Is this sweater really worth that much to me? Or am I just caught up in the hype of the show? It’s so easy to get sucked into that fantasy, right? You see someone looking fabulous on screen, in Paris, and you think, “Maybe if I wear that, I’ll feel a bit of that magic.”

I even chatted with one of the sales assistants. Super friendly. She mentioned how popular the brand had become, especially certain pieces “seen on TV.” No surprises there. It made me realize just how much a popular show can influence things, from desire to, well, pricing strategy, I guess.

What I Ended Up Doing

In the end, I walked away without the Ami sweater. My practical side just couldn’t justify it. I thought about what I really liked about it – the simple design, the comfortable feel, that touch of understated French style. And I realized I could find that in other places, for a price that felt more reasonable for me.

I actually found a lovely merino wool sweater from a different, less “hyped” brand a few weeks later. It had a similar vibe, great quality, and I felt fantastic wearing it. No little heart logo, but that was okay. It felt more like my style, not something I was trying to copy from a screen.

So, that was my little journey with the Ami trend sparked by the show. It was an interesting experience, mostly because it made me think about what we’re really buying into. Sometimes it’s the item itself, and sometimes it’s the story or the dream attached to it. For me, this time, I decided the dream wasn’t worth the price of admission for that particular piece. Still love the show for the escapism, though!
