Started my crazy haircut maintenance experiment this morning, totally blank slate with bedhead chaos. Grabbed my trusty clippers first thing – gotta reset this wild mess before building it back up.
Getting that baseline shape
Washed everything out first. Used that cheap clarifying shampoo I keep around when product builds up too much. Scrubbed hard! Towel-dried rough to keep volume poppin’. Sectioned off the top completely – left it longer to play with later. Used the #2 guard on the sides and back with my clippers. Took it all the way up to my natural part line. For the super-short fade near the bottom? Switched to the #0.5 guard. Held my skin real tight while going over it slowly. Always go slow!
Building texture city
The top was the fun part. Towel-dried it again but left it slightly damp. Applied a big walnut-sized blob of this cheap sea salt spray all over, scrunching it upwards like mad with my fingers. Blow-dried while scrunching! Messy texture is the goal – perfect ain’t happening.

- Hit it with the dryer nozzle pointing upwards the whole time
- Kept scrunching until it felt mostly dry
Locking in the madness
For hold, grabbed my old tub of matte paste. Seriously, anything matte works for keeping it messy looking. Scooped out a dime size, rubbed it hard between palms and fingers.
- Pushed it into the roots sideways, then upwards
- Twisted random sections for that “just rolled outta bed” vibe
- Pinched some pieces sticking up, kept ’em standing
Absolute last move? Quick spray of regular hairspray, held about a foot away – no shine allowed. Messed it up lightly right after so it didn’t look sprayed.
Final thought? It’s messy work. Takes trial and error. Sometimes you add too much paste, sometimes the spray makes it crunchier than a chip. You fix it by rewetting or adding texture powder. Experiment like crazy – worst case, just wear a hat tomorrow.
