British Strong Style: Is It Right for You? Find Out!

by Meredith Sassoon

Alright, so today I’m gonna walk you through my little experiment with “British Strong Style.” Been hearing a lot about it, figured I’d give it a shot and see what all the fuss is about. Basically, it’s about mixing powerlifting with some grappling and striking, making it a pretty brutal combo.

First thing I did was dive into some research. Watched a bunch of videos, read some articles, trying to get a feel for the core principles. It’s not just about being strong; it’s about being explosively strong, agile, and having the grit to just keep going.

Warm-up was key. I started with some basic mobility stuff: arm circles, leg swings, torso twists. Then I moved into some dynamic stretches like walking lunges and high knees. Needed to get the blood flowing and the joints lubed up.

Next up, the strength work. I kept it simple but heavy. Here’s the rundown:

  • Deadlifts: Went for a 5×5 with about 80% of my max. Focus was on keeping my back straight and exploding up.
  • Overhead Press: 3×8. Really tried to control the weight on the way down and push it back up with power.
  • Squats: Another 5×5. Gotta keep those legs strong. Made sure to go deep and maintain good form.

After the lifting, it was time for the grappling and striking aspect. I don’t have a proper wrestling or boxing background, so I kept it basic.

  • Shadow Boxing: Just threw some punches and kicks, focusing on speed and technique.
  • Grappling Drills: Practiced some takedowns and escapes on a mat. Nothing fancy, just the basics.
  • Sledgehammer Swings: This was a fun one. Smashing a tire with a sledgehammer. Good for conditioning and power.

Then I mixed it all together into a short circuit. Here’s what I did:

  • 5 Deadlifts
  • 10 Burpees
  • 20 Sledgehammer Swings (10 each side)
  • Rest 1 minute
  • Repeat 3-5 times

Man, that circuit was killer. My heart rate was through the roof, and I was sweating like crazy. But it felt good, you know? Like I was really pushing myself.

Cool-down was crucial. Some static stretches, holding each for about 30 seconds. Hamstrings, quads, chest, shoulders – hit ’em all.

What I Learned

This “British Strong Style” thing is no joke. It’s tough, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. I definitely felt stronger and more conditioned after just a few sessions. It’s a good way to break up the monotony of regular lifting and add some real-world functionality to your training.

I’m still a beginner, but I’m excited to keep exploring this style of training. I need to work on my grappling and striking technique, for sure. But I’m committed to putting in the work and seeing where it takes me. Maybe I’ll even enter a strongman competition one day… who knows?

So, there you have it – my first foray into the world of British Strong Style. It’s brutal, it’s challenging, and it’s a whole lot of fun. Give it a try and see if it’s for you. Just be prepared to push yourself hard!
