Bicycle Hermes: Is It Worth the Hype (Luxury Bike Review)

by Joyce Mackintosh

Okay, so I’ve been seeing these “bicycle Hermes” things pop up, and I was like, “What’s the deal?” I’m not really a fancy brand person, but the idea of a super luxurious bike? It kinda piqued my interest. So, I decided to do a little experiment, not buying one, of course, because who has that kind of cash lying around?

My DIY “Hermes” Bike Project

First, I grabbed my old bike from the garage. It’s a pretty standard mountain bike, nothing special, but it’s sturdy and reliable. It was pretty dusty, so I gave it a good wash down. Soap, water, the whole deal. Got it looking all shiny and new(ish).

Next, I thought about what makes a “Hermes” bike, well, “Hermes.” It’s all about the leather, right? So, I went to a local craft store and picked up some leather scraps. I’m not gonna lie, I have zero experience working with leather. This could go very wrong.

  • Step 1: Cleaned the bike.
  • Step 2: Acquired leather scraps. Sounds fancier than “bought,” right?

I decided to focus on the handlebars and the seat. Those seemed like the most obvious places for leather accents. I cut the leather into strips, using some old scissors. Precision was not my forte, let me tell you. Some strips were wider than others, some were a little crooked, but hey, that’s the “handmade” charm, right?

Then came the hard part: attaching the leather. I tried using some heavy-duty glue, but it was a mess. It got everywhere, and the leather kept slipping. So, I switched to plan B: I hand stitched the leather. I used some thick thread, the stuff for canvas or something, and poked a basic stitch. It took forever, and my fingers were definitely feeling it, but slowely it started taking the shape.

  • Step 3: Cut and struggled with the leather strips.
  • Step 4: Tried to glue, failed to glue. Seriously, glue everywhere.
  • Step 5: Sewed on the leather strips. My fingers still hurt.

Finally, after hours of work, my “Hermes-inspired” bike was done. It’s definitely not winning any awards, and it certainly wouldn’t fool anyone into thinking it’s the real deal. The leather’s a bit wonky, the stitching is uneven, but you know what? I made it. It’s my own little piece of (very) budget luxury.

The ride? Surprisingly comfortable! The leather on the handlebars actually feels pretty good. The seat, less so, because I didn’t have any good padding and I just stitched the leather over the hard base. I rode around my block, feeling pretty smug. Would I recommend this project? Maybe, if you’re bored and have a lot of patience. It’s definitely a conversation starter.
