Okay, so I’ve been meaning to make a work skirt for ages. I finally got around to it, and let me tell you, it was a bit of a journey!

Getting Started
First, I picked out some fabric. I went with this nice, sturdy, dark gray material I found at the local fabric shop. It’s kind of a classic look, you know? Something that goes with everything.
The Pattern Struggle
Next up was finding a pattern. I looked online for something simple, but honestly, most of them were way too complicated. So, I decided to wing it a bit. I used a skirt I already owned and liked the fit of as a rough guide. I laid it out on some paper and kind of traced the general shape, leaving extra room for seams and stuff.
Cutting and Pinning
Then came the scary part – cutting the fabric! I measured everything like five times, because I really didn’t want to mess it up. After I cut out the pieces, I pinned them together inside-out, making sure the edges lined up.
Sewing Adventures
Then it was time to sew! I dusted off my old sewing machine (it’s been a while) and got to work. I started with the side seams. It took a bit of fiddling to get the tension right, but I got there. After the sides, I did the waistband. That was probably the trickiest part.
- Sew the sides.
- Attach the waistband.
- Finish the hem.
Finishing Touches
The last step was hemming the bottom. I folded the raw edge over twice and sewed a straight line all the way around. And that’s it! I have a new work skirt!

The Final Result
It’s not perfect, there’s a wonky part there, the hem is not that professional, but it’s totally wearable, and I made it myself! I’m pretty proud of how it turned out, even with all the little hiccups along the way. I’ll definitely be wearing this to the office.
