Okay, here we go! Let me share my fashion crochet clothes making journey with you all. It was a wild ride, but totally worth it!
So, it all started a few weeks ago. I was scrolling through Pinterest, as one does, and I saw this super cute crochet top. I thought to myself, “Hey, I can totally make that!” Famous last words, right?
I hadn’t crocheted anything in ages, like maybe since I was a kid. But I remembered the basics. I dug out my old crochet hooks and some yarn I had lying around – a mix of cotton and acrylic, mostly in shades of blue because that’s my jam.
First things first, I needed a pattern. I found a free one online for a simple bralette-style top. Looked easy enough. I started with the first square, following the pattern stitch by stitch. It was slow going at first. I kept making mistakes, having to frog (that’s crochet lingo for ripping out your work) entire rows. My tension was all over the place, some stitches were too tight, others too loose. It was a mess!
But I persevered! I watched a bunch of YouTube tutorials to refresh my memory on the basic stitches: single crochet, double crochet, chain stitch – the holy trinity of crochet. Slowly but surely, the square started to take shape. It was wonky, for sure, but it was my wonky square.
The pattern called for making two of these squares, then joining them together. That’s where the real fun began. I decided to improvise a little. The pattern had simple straps, but I wanted something a bit more interesting. I crocheted some long chains and then wove them through the top, creating a criss-cross halter neck. It looked pretty cool, if I do say so myself.
Next up was the finishing. I added a simple border around the edges to neaten everything up. I also added some little tassels to the bottom, because why not? Tassels make everything better.
The biggest challenge was definitely the fit. Crochet can be tricky because it stretches. I kept trying it on as I went, making adjustments here and there. I ended up adding some extra rows to the bottom to make it a bit longer. And I had to tighten the straps a few times to get the right support.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, it was done! My first fashion crochet garment! It’s not perfect, not by a long shot. There are definitely some wonky stitches and uneven bits. But I’m so proud of it! I wore it out to a music festival last weekend, and I got so many compliments. People couldn’t believe I made it myself.

- Don’t be afraid to experiment. The pattern is just a guide. You can always add your own personal touches.

- Embrace the imperfections. Handmade items have character. The little flaws are what make them unique.
