80s tennis attire for men: How to get the iconic retro look on the court

by Griffith Maggie

Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with that retro ’80s vibe lately, you know? And tennis? Super chic. So I thought, why not mix the two? I decided to put together an ’80s tennis outfit and let me tell you, it was a journey.

Getting Started

First off, I had to figure out what people even wore for tennis back in the ’80s. Turns out, it was all about those crisp polo shirts, and they were usually white. “Tennis whites,” they called it. I rummaged through my closet but, no luck. Everything I had was either too modern or not sporty enough.

The Search

So, I started checking out what the big tennis brands like Lacoste, Adidas, and Fila were doing back then. I saw a lot of cool stuff on athletes, but finding those styles now? Not so easy. I hit up a few vintage stores, hoping to score some authentic ’80s gear. I found a couple of things, but nothing that really screamed “tennis.”

Putting It Together

  • Top: I ended up finding a vintage white polo that had that ’80s collar. It wasn’t specifically tennis wear, but it had the right look.
  • Bottom: This was tough. I wanted those classic shorts, but I also considered a pleated skirt. I found a skirt that kind of worked, but it wasn’t perfect.
  • Shoes: I just went with some classic white sneakers. I figured that was close enough.
  • Accessories: I remembered that ties were a thing in the ’80s, even in sports sometimes. I didn’t have a sporty tie, so I skipped that. But I did add a white headband. Felt very ’80s tennis to me.

The Final Look

I put it all together, and honestly? It was pretty cool. Not exactly what I imagined, but it definitely had that retro ’80s tennis feel. I wore it out to play a game, and yeah, I got some looks. But hey, it was fun, and I felt like I was stepping back in time a bit.

This whole thing was more about the experience than getting the outfit perfect. It made me appreciate how style evolves and how much fun it can be to play around with different eras. Would I do it again? For sure. Maybe next time I’ll try to find some actual ’80s tennis gear. We’ll see!
