I gotta tell you about this Bessie Cavallo thing I got into. I’ve been seeing this name pop up everywhere, and it got me really curious. So, I started digging around, and let me tell you, it turned into a whole journey.

First, I did what everyone does – I hit up the internet. I typed “Bessie Cavallo” into the search bar, not really knowing what to expect. The first few things that came up were about some movie. It’s set way back in 1925, and it’s about these two sisters, Bessie and Jo Cavallo, played by Joey King and Abby Quinn. Apparently, they’re based on real people, these sisters who worked in a factory painting watch dials with radium. Sounds pretty heavy, right?
So, I watched some clips and read some summaries about this movie. It got me thinking about how tough things were back then, especially for women. These sisters, they were just trying to make a living, and they ended up in a really bad situation. It’s messed up. One part that really stuck with me was when Bessie confronts this guy who changed his story. He basically says he did it to protect his own family after his sister died of cancer. It’s all about tough choices and how people deal with bad situations.
But then, my search took a weird turn. I stumbled upon this other Bessie, Bessie Stringfield. Turns out, she was a total badass. They called her the “Motorcycle Queen of Miami.” This was back in the 1930s and 40s, a time when things were even harder if you were a black woman. But Bessie, she didn’t let that stop her.
I watched this documentary about her, and man, was it inspiring. She rode her motorcycle all over the United States, all by herself. Eight long-distance trips! Can you imagine? At that time, with all the racism and prejudice, it must have taken so much guts. She was a real pioneer, breaking down barriers for everyone who came after her. They even put her in the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2002, which is pretty cool.
Then there’s this other Bessie I found – Bessie Coleman. This woman was a pilot, back in the 1920s. Now, being a pilot back then wasn’t easy for anyone, let alone a woman. She had to fight for everything she got. She had this dream of flying, and she went for it, no matter what. People called her “Queen Bess” and “Brave Bessie,” and she became famous for doing airshows. She had to hustle to make a living as a pilot, but she did it.

Reflections on Bessie Cavallo and Bessie Stringfield
So, from these search, I found three people named Bessie, each with an incredible story. This whole thing started with me looking up Bessie Cavallo, thinking it was about one person, and it led me down this rabbit hole of history and inspiring women. They all faced some real challenges.
- Bessie Cavallo was about fighting for what’s right, even when it’s hard.
- Bessie Stringfield showed me what it means to be brave and to chase your dreams, no matter what.
- Bessie Coleman taught me a lesson about dedication and never giving up.
It’s crazy how one name can lead you to so many different stories. It just goes to show you, there’s so much history out there, so many amazing people who’ve done incredible things. It really makes you think.
I think I’ll spend more time on studying this topic, because there is so much more that I’d like to find out. But for now I will record these in my blog, just a casual share.
