My Calvin Klein Window Project Adventure

Heard Calvin Klein dropped new season styles last week. Figured my town’s shop window needed a fresh look to show ’em off. Grabbed my big coffee cup and headed downtown early Tuesday.

First stop, chatted up store manager Mike. Asked if I could borrow the new pieces everyone’s buzzing about. Got the nod plus four boring store dummy dolls. Hauled everything into the backroom where I do my display thing.

Here’s what went down:

  • Dusted off those headless dolls like crazy – stuff collected after winter.
  • Struggled hard dressing stiff plastic arms into skinny jeans. Felt like wrestling an octopus.
  • Spotted that one jacket’s sleeve stitching coming loose. Quick stitch job saved the day.

Setup time hit major drama. Wanted a clean “floating” look using fishing wire. Tied jackets to the ceiling beams, slipped jeans onto hooks… then WHAM! One jeans hook snapped right off mid-air. Jeans pancaked onto the floor. Fishline tangles everywhere.

Swore under my breath. Dumped the “float” idea quick. Piled up those fake shipping pallets I scored from behind Target. Arranged dolls staggered like they’re standing in line for concert tickets. Threw wrinkled fabric rolls under their feet – my “abstract city rubble” excuse.

Got fancy with lights too. Pointed spots to make shadows dance behind them. That new denim jacket? Shone like disco under the warm yellow bulb. Fumbled setting timers though – whole thing nearly crashed three times.

Finished just before lunch rush. Mike came out, squinted hard at the dolls in slanting poses. “Looks… urban?” he mumbled. Whatever works! Saw two teens actually stopping outside snapping photos. Felt that good ache in my shoulders.

Would’ve killed for thicker fishing line. And mannequins that bend knees. Maybe next time just tape jeans to the window glass?

Anybody else done displays lately? How’d you stop stuff from falling apart? Share me your fails!
