Okay, so today I really wanted to figure out those cozy hat and scarf sets everyone’s raving about this season. Seriously, they look so comfy in the ads and on other bloggers, right? But which ones actually feel as good as they look? Had to get hands-on and find out. Grabbed my messy notebook and headed straight to my favourite craft store downtown – you know the one, always smells like wool and coffee.

Honestly, it was overwhelming at first. Shelves packed with so much yarn. Needed something soft but sturdy, winter-ready but not itchy. Started grabbing different skeins, mostly bulky weight yarns. Settled on three wool-acrylic blends for warmth without scratching, and one super chunky merino wool blend – felt ridiculously plush, couldn’t resist even though it was pricier. That one practically begged to become a luxurious hat and scarf set. Who am I to argue with yarn?
Started with the simplest hat pattern. Cast on stitches for a ribbed brim on size 8 circulars. Knitting those first few rows felt good, relaxing. But hitting the stockinette stitch section? That’s where things got funky. My tension must’ve loosened up, because once I got to shaping the crown, the thing became this weird flat blob instead of a cute beanie. Total fail. Ended up ripping back halfway. Sigh. Third time’s the charm, right? Switched to a pattern with more consistent stitch counting, paid close attention this time, and finally got that smooth curve for the crown. Phew.
For the scarves, I wanted textures to match the hats but be interesting to knit. Picked three basic patterns and one cable pattern for the fancy merino.
- First scarf: Simple garter stitch border with a wide stockinette center. Fast, easy, good TV knitting.
- Second set: Did a whole mock cable thing for texture – looked fancy but honestly wasn’t much harder than knitting regular.
- Third option: Ribbed the whole way, super stretchy and snug, perfect for tucking into coats.
- The merino luxury pair: Used a simple cable down the center of the scarf and mini cables on the hat. Spent way too long figuring out where to place the cables on the hat so it looked balanced!
Weaving in ends? Hate that part. Always do. Sat at the kitchen table, podcasts blaring, weaving needle in hand, meticulously tucking away every single tail. Then, the grand finale – washed each set gently. The merino fluffed up so nice! Let them all air dry flat, resisting the urge to poke them while they dried.
Finally tried them on together. The chunky merino set felt like a cloud. Seriously soft and warm. The mock cable pair looked super polished. The ribbed ones? So stretchy and comfortable, easy to pull on without messing up hair. Even the simplest stockinette hat and scarf just looked classic and clean. Took some mess-ups and lots of practice, but holding that pile of finished, coordinating sets? Totally worth the effort. They feel substantial, warm, and look put-together without trying too hard. Exactly what I wanted for battling the cold this season.
