Okay so fall hit hard this week, right? Woke up freezing and realized my summer dresses just won’t cut it anymore. But I really wanted to keep wearing skirts – they just feel more me. Decided to spend Tuesday figuring out how to stay warm without looking like a bundled-up mess. Grabbed a bunch of stuff from my closet and started playing around.

First thing I did? Pulled out this thick A-line corduroy skirt I kinda forgot about – dark green, super forgiving. Figured thicker fabric was key. Paired it with the chunkiest beige knit turtleneck I own. Instant cozy vibes, but felt a bit… shapeless. Hmm. Threw on a thin, worn-in brown leather belt over the sweater right at the waist. Boom! Better. Snatched the silhouette without feeling squeezed.
Then the legs… Freezing! Dug through my sock drawer. Found these sheer black tights – okay, but still chilly. Switched to opaque black tights. Warmer, yes, but needed more. Remembered these fleece-lined leggings hiding in the back! Slipped those on under the skirt. Total game changer. Comfy, warm, and completely invisible under the skirt length.
Shoes were next. My usual sneakers felt wrong. Tried my ankle boots – classic black leather ones. Looked okay, but felt basic. Swapped to my knee-high brown riding boots instead. Way better! Covered more leg, felt sturdy for walking, and the leather matched the belt perfectly. Added instant polish.
Accessories… Frosty ears are the worst. Found a soft, loose-knit black beanie. Tried it on. Nope – flattened my hair and felt too bulky. Instead, wrapped a big, fuzzy cream scarf around my neck a bunch of times. That helped trap heat without the hat headache. Also dug out my old olive green wool coat – knee-length. Buttoned it up over everything. Actually felt TOASTY walking outside to test it!
The winner combo I landed on?

- Corduroy skirt (dark, heavy fabric)
- Thick turtleneck (lighter neutral color)
- Skinny belt (cinched over the sweater)
- Fleece-lined tights (secret warmth weapon!)
- Tall brown leather boots (covering ankles/knees)
- Big fluffy scarf (cozy neck coverage)
- Simple long coat (blocked the wind)
Took a few tries, but honestly felt stylish AND didn’t freeze! That fleece-lined secret layer under the skirt is everything. Who knew?
