My Fall Outfit Experiment Started With a Closet Disaster
So I was staring at my closet this morning with a giant coffee mug in my hand. Fall vibes hitting hard outside with that drizzle and cold wind. Wanted something cozy but not looking like a potato sack. Black and maroon kept popping in my head – classy but warm colors for this weather.

Dumped all my fall clothes on the bed like a tornado hit. Sweaters flying, jeans everywhere, five pairs of boots tumbling out. Started picking things like a squirrel gathering nuts. Grabbed:
- My thickest maroon turtleneck sweater (that scratchy wool one from last year)
- 2 black cardigans – one thin, one chunky knit
- Black faux leather leggings (the shiny ones that make your legs look good)
- Maroon corduroy pants (forgot I even owned these honestly)
- Every scarf and beanie in these colors
The struggle started when trying combos. First attempt: maroon sweater with black leggings. Felt like half a Christmas decoration. Added long black cardigan – BAM. Perfect cozy vibe. Took photos in my bedroom mirror with messy hair still.
Next disaster: those maroon cords with a black sweater. Looked like I lost color lottery. Swapped for thin black turtleneck and giant maroon scarf instead. Threw on black ankle boots – suddenly looked put together! Did a happy dance right there.
By lunchtime I had 3 solid outfits:
- Comfy Chic: Maroon turtleneck + black leggings + chunky cardigan + black boots
- Casual Warm: Black thin sweater + maroon cords + maroon beanie + black sneakers
- Dressy Fall: Black turtleneck dress + maroon oversized scarf + knee-high black boots
The winner? That faux leather leggings combo. Wore it to grocery shopping later. Random lady at produce section said “I love your fall look!” Almost dropped my sweet potatoes. Felt like a fashion genius in that moment.

Ended the day realizing you don’t need fancy clothes for fall style. Just some basic black and maroon pieces mixed together. And maybe a little bedlam in your bedroom while creating chaos!
