Alright so this started when my buddy Dave came over last weekend griping about his dry-ass smoked chicken. Said he couldn’t find decent spots since his usual joint closed. Figured hell, why not hunt down the current hot spots myself? Grabbed my notebook and hit the pavement Tuesday morning.

The Game Plan
First thing, I drove straight to that old strip mall where Big Hank’s Smokery used to be. Place is boarded up now, total bummer. Asked the guy sweeping next door – turns out Hank retired months ago. Strike one.
The Wild Goose Chase
Pulled out my phone and started scrolling local groups. Saw three names pop up repeatedly:
- Smokehouse Alley near the old train tracks
- Backyard Pit behind the auto shop
- That sketchy roadside trailer by the highway
Drove thirty damn minutes to Smokehouse Alley first. Place looked legit but closed on Tuesdays. Almost kicked their dumpster.
Trial By Fire
Hit Backyard Pit around noon. Huge dude in an apron waved me over. Ordered half chicken plus ribs because screw it. Chicken came out glistening – deep mahogany color with that perfect smoke ring. First bite? Juice ran down my wrist. Damn near moaned. Their secret? Peppery dry rub and 15 hours in hickory smoke. Bagged two more halves to go.

The Dark Horse
Almost skipped the roadside trailer. Looked like health code violation central. But hey, research is research. Old lady took cash only. Chicken came wrapped in butcher paper – simpler rub, heavier smoke. Crust was blackened but meat pulled clean off the bone. Totally different vibe but legit good.
The Verdict
After burning through six pounds of chicken:
- Backyard Pit wins for classic perfection
- Roadside trailer nails that rustic smoky punch
- Still need to hit Smokehouse Alley tomorrow
Dave owes me big time. Leftovers currently filling my fridge. Smell might never leave my car. Worth it.
