My Night at Bar Americain

Alright, let me tell you about this time I checked out Bar Americain over in NYC. I’d heard some folks mention it, you know, one of those classic spots, supposed to have a real old-school vibe. I was wandering around Midtown after work one evening, feeling kinda thirsty, and thought, “Okay, let’s do this.”

Finding the place wasn’t too hard. Walked a few blocks, dodged the usual crowds. Stepped inside, and yeah, it definitely had a look. Lots of dark wood, brass railings, dim lighting. Felt a bit like stepping back in time, but maybe a bit… I dunno, polished? Not quite a dive bar, not quite super fancy either. It was decently busy, a low hum of conversation, clinking glasses.

I managed to snag a spot at the bar itself. Always prefer the bar, you get to see the action. The bartender, guy looked like he knew his stuff, nodded at me. Didn’t waste much time looking at a menu. When in Rome, right? Or, well, when in a place called Bar Americain.

What I Got

  • An Old Fashioned. Seemed like the right call.
  • Some nuts or something they had sitting on the bar. Just grabbed a few.

So, I sat there, sipped my drink. Gotta say, the Old Fashioned was solid. Made properly, not too sweet, good whiskey bite. Watched the bartender mix drinks for a bit. He was efficient, no fuss. The crowd was mostly what you’d expect for Midtown – folks in suits unwinding after work, maybe a couple of tourists who’d wandered in.

Didn’t really talk to anyone. Wasn’t feeling particularly chatty, just wanted to soak it in, enjoy the drink. Sometimes that’s all you need, you know? Just a good, strong drink in a place that feels like it’s been there forever, even if maybe it hasn’t. Stayed for maybe an hour, finished my drink, paid the tab. It wasn’t cheap, but hey, it’s NYC, what do you expect?

Walked out feeling pretty satisfied. It wasn’t mind-blowing, didn’t change my life or anything. But it delivered on what I expected: a decent, classic cocktail in a kinda swanky, old-style American bar setting. Did the job. Would I rush back? Maybe not immediately, there are tons of bars in the city. But if I was in the neighborhood again and wanted a reliable, well-made drink without too much fuss? Yeah, I’d probably stop in again. Solid spot.
