The Waiting Part Begins
After submitting, I got that instant confirmation on the screen saying the documents were received. Okay, good start. But then… nothing. The tracking status didn’t change right away. It just showed that the shipment was on hold, waiting for the next step, which I figured was the document review.
I’m not the most patient person when it comes to shipping things. So, I started checking the tracking like, way too often. Tuesday afternoon, still nothing. Wednesday morning, same status. You start wondering, did they actually get them? Is there a problem? Did I fill something out wrong?
Trying to Get Answers
By Wednesday afternoon, I decided to give DHL customer service a call. Waited on hold for maybe 10 minutes, not too bad. Got through to someone, gave them my tracking number, and explained I’d uploaded the documents the day before and just wanted to know the status. The person on the phone was nice enough. They confirmed they could see the documents were submitted. They basically said it was in the queue for review by the customs clearance team and that it takes some time. They couldn’t give me an exact timeframe, just that it was being processed. Fair enough, I guess.
Finally, Movement!
I tried to put it out of my mind. Then, Thursday morning, around 9 AM, I checked the tracking again just out of habit. Bingo! The status had finally updated. It showed something like “Clearance processing complete” or similar. The package started moving again shortly after that.
So, How Long Did It Take?
For me, from submitting the documents around 10 AM Tuesday to getting the clearance update around 9 AM Thursday, it was roughly almost two full business days. Keep in mind this was just my experience.
Things that probably affect the timing:
- What kind of documents are needed.
- How busy the specific DHL customs team is for that country/route.
- Whether your documents are clear and complete.
- Time zones can play a part too, depending on where the review happens.
