Okay, so I’m gonna share my little DIY adventure with these designer straw bags I was messing around with recently. It was a whole process, lemme tell ya!

It all started when I saw some crazy expensive straw bags online. Like, seriously? For straw? So, naturally, I thought, “I can totally do that myself!” Plus, I was bored.
First things first, I hit up the local craft store. Grabbed a plain straw bag – nothing fancy, just a basic one. Then I went a little wild with the embellishments. I picked up some colorful yarn, a bunch of different beads, some fake flowers that looked kinda real, and this cool ribbon with little pom-poms on it.
The first thing I did was take some yarn and kinda randomly wrap it around the handles of the bag. I didn’t really have a plan, just wanted to add some color. I secured it with a hot glue gun (which, by the way, I burned myself like three times. Worth it, though!).
Next up: the beads. I started sewing them onto the front of the bag in a pattern that looked good in my head. It was slow going, let me tell you. I pricked my fingers a whole bunch of times, and I swear I almost ran out of patience, but I kept going.
After the beads, I glued on the fake flowers. I tried to arrange them in a way that looked kinda natural, like they were growing out of the bag. It was tricky, but I think I managed to make it look pretty cute.

Then came the pom-pom ribbon. I decided to glue it around the top edge of the bag, just to add a little something extra. It was a pain to get it straight, but I think it turned out okay.
Honestly, the whole thing took way longer than I thought it would. Like, several evenings worth of effort. But in the end, I was pretty happy with how it turned out. It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s unique, and I made it myself!
Here’s a few things I learned along the way:
- Hot glue guns are your friend, but also your enemy. Be careful!
- Sewing beads is tedious, but the result is worth it.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment! Just go with what looks good to you.
So, yeah, that’s my designer straw bag saga. It was fun, it was messy, and I ended up with a bag that’s totally one-of-a-kind. Would I do it again? Probably. Maybe with a different design next time!
