Alright, so I messed around with making my own color hair conditioner today. Figured I’d share how it went down.

First off, I did some digging online. Watched a bunch of YouTube vids, read a few blog posts – the usual. I was mainly trying to figure out what ingredients I needed and what the heck I was actually doing. Seemed simple enough: conditioner base, dye, mix, slap it on your head. Easy peasy, right?
Next up, shoppin’ time. I grabbed a big ol’ tub of plain, white conditioner. The cheap stuff, because if I screwed this up, I didn’t wanna waste the good stuff. Then I headed over to the hair dye aisle and picked out a vibrant blue. Looked cool, plus my hair’s already kinda light, so I figured it’d take well. Snagged some gloves too, ’cause I ain’t tryin’ to dye my hands blue.
Got home, laid down some newspaper to protect my bathroom counter from potential dye explosions. Then I scooped a generous amount of conditioner into a plastic bowl – maybe half the tub? Eyeballed it, honestly. Next, I squeezed in the blue dye. Started with a little, mixed it up, added more until I got a color I liked. It looked like electric blueberry yogurt, which, surprisingly, was kinda appealing.
Now came the moment of truth: application. I hopped in the shower, wet my hair, and started slathering the blue conditioner all over. Made sure to get every strand coated. Looked like a Smurf attacked my head. Then I just chilled for like, 20 minutes, letting the color soak in. Listened to some tunes, contemplated the meaning of life – you know, the usual shower thoughts.
Rinsed it all out, and… nothin’. Okay, maybe a slight tint of blue, but barely noticeable. What the heck? Guess I didn’t use enough dye. So, I went back to the bowl, added a TON more dye, and repeated the whole process. Another 20 minutes, another rinse… and BAM! Bright, vibrant blue hair! Success!
Okay, maybe “success” is a strong word. My hair was definitely blue, but it was also kinda uneven. Some spots were super bright, others were more of a subtle blue-green. Oh well, live and learn, right? Still looked pretty cool, even if it was a bit patchy.
Cleaned up the bathroom (which looked like a blue massacre had occurred), and called it a day. Overall, a fun experiment. Definitely learned a thing or two. Next time, I’ll probably use even MORE dye and maybe try to be a bit more careful with the application. But hey, at least I got blue hair, right?
Things I Learned:
- Don’t be afraid to use a lot of dye. Like, seriously, a LOT.
- Gloves are your friend. Seriously.
- Even application is key. Maybe enlist a friend for help.
- Embrace the mess. It’s gonna happen.
Would I do it again? Absolutely! It’s way cheaper than going to a salon, and it’s kinda fun to experiment. Plus, who doesn’t love rocking a crazy hair color every now and then?
