Emilys Night Routine: How I Unwind After a Long Day

by Doreen Robbins

Alright, so last night I decided to actually stick to a night routine for once. I always see those “perfect” routines online and I’m like, “Yeah, okay, who actually does all that?!” But I figured, hey, even a small routine is better than nothing, right?

First thing I did was actually turn off my phone. I know, crazy! I usually scroll through TikTok until my eyes feel like sandpaper. This time, I put it on the charger in another room. Major step.

Next up: washed my face. I used this cleanser I got from the drugstore, nothing fancy. Just got all the grime from the day off. Then I splashed on some cold water – woke me up a bit!

After that, it was time for tea. I made a cup of chamomile tea. It smelled nice and it was warm. I just sat on the couch and sipped it. I usually gulp down everything. I focused on just drinking the tea slowly. That was kinda nice actually.

Okay, so here’s where I almost failed. I almost turned on the TV. But I resisted! Instead, I picked up a book. It’s this cheesy romance novel I’ve been meaning to read. Read like three chapters. It was a great way to stop think about work and other stuff.

Finally, I did some light stretching. My back always feels tight after sitting all day. I found a quick five-minute yoga routine on YouTube. Didn’t do every pose perfectly, but it helped loosen things up.

Then it was lights out. Actually got into bed before 11pm, which is a miracle for me. And get this – I fell asleep pretty fast! Usually I toss and turn for ages.

This morning, I gotta say, I felt way more rested than usual. No, I wasn’t magically transformed into a supermodel. But I didn’t feel like a zombie. So, yeah, I think I might try to stick to this little routine. Small steps, right? Who knows, maybe I’ll even add a fancy face mask next week. We’ll see!

  • Turned off phone
  • Washed face
  • Drank chamomile tea
  • Read a book
  • Did light stretching
  • Went to bed early

Final thoughts

I know this sounds simple, and it is. The point wasn’t to achieve perfection but to be more intentional about my wind-down time. It’s a work in progress, but last night was definitely a step in the right direction.
