So, I was digging through some old stuff the other day, you know, just sorting things out, and I came across my wife’s original engagement ring. We upgraded years ago, but this one, it holds memories. She mentioned wanting to wear it sometimes, maybe on her other hand, but it didn’t quite fit anymore. Figured I’d get it resized for her, like a little surprise.

My first thought, honestly? Merksamer Jewelers. Yeah, I know, blast from the past, right? I just remember them being in, like, every mall back in the day. Seemed like a decent, reliable place. Can’t recall if we got that specific ring there, maybe the wedding band? Memory’s a bit fuzzy on the details, but the name stuck with me as a solid option for jewelry stuff.
Looking Around
So, I decided, right, I’ll swing by the old mall after work, drop off the ring at Merksamer. Pulled out my phone, opened the map app, typed it in. Nothing. Zip. Nada. Just showed me a bunch of other jewelry stores, mostly Zales actually. Strange, I thought. Maybe they moved? Tried a wider search. Still nothing.
Did a quick search on the web browser this time. Took about ten seconds to figure it out. Apparently, Zales bought out Merksamer Jewelers way back. Like, over a decade ago. All those stores either closed or got turned into Zales locations. Man, did I feel out of touch. Just like that, a whole brand I remembered, gone, absorbed into a bigger fish.
Got Me Thinking
It really got me thinking about how retail changes, doesn’t it? You have these brands you kind of trust, or at least recognize, and then they just disappear, or merge, or whatever. It’s not just jewelers, it’s everything.
- Remember specific stores in the mall?
- Then suddenly they’re replaced by something else.
- Or the whole mall declines.
It reminded me of this time I took a watch, just needed a battery, to one of those big chain places. Not Zales, another one. Seemed simple enough. Took them ages. When I finally got it back, the back casing was all scratched up. I was so mad. They just didn’t seem to care much. It wasn’t like dealing with an old-school watch guy or a dedicated jeweler.

That whole Merksamer thing disappearing kind of bummed me out for a minute. Made me nostalgic, I guess. Finding someone reliable for something small but important, like resizing a ring with sentimental value, feels like more of a gamble now. You don’t always know who you’re dealing with behind the big corporate name. Ended up finding a small, independent guy downtown based on a friend’s recommendation. He did a good job, thankfully. But yeah, learning Merksamer was long gone… definitely a reminder of how much things shift around without you even noticing sometimes.
